Dear All,

Richard, one of our teammates and now studying at Duke, offered to provide helps to BBY MBA Teammates upon he arrived at Duke. And he talked about it a few times. Now he is busy with the up coming final exams.

Richard will help answer questions about Duke here at the forum. For the general questions, he will answer here. For the private questions, especially for those who are applying to Duke, Richard can give additional help either through phone or email or through us.

Richard is super busy, the same with other first year students, let's filter out the general questions here first at the forum.

You can get her email address or even phone number later from JuanJuan, Jinbo or me.

Thank you, Richard for giving the support!

Please post the questions that you may wish to know about Duke. Also, let's value Richard's time by not asking basic questions.

RE: Help from Duke BeBeyond Alumni

Hi, folks, you are warmly welcome to post your questions here, I would like to help you know more about Duke as much as I can.

The first thing here I would like to address is that you guys do not need to worry about anything about this spring's cheating scandle. Till now I haven't experienced any discrimination from either faculty or current students. I had also chance to talk with admission officers, they all confirmed that they would not impose any negative impact to Chinese prospective students.

So don't worry, explore more about Duke and apply for being a Blue Devil!

Richard, nice to see you again. I have some questions. May I ask?

What is Blue Devil and what's your personal experience with it? Why is it so significant, in your opinion?

RE: Help from Duke BeBeyond Alumni

Hi, Jinbo, thanks for your question, and actually it's a great one!

Someone raised the same question during our Orientation, but as international student, it's really hard to fully understand American's culture and history background, so I just forgot the answer...

Well, that doesn't mean I would help you guys out of curious. I will seek domestic students again to give you guys response later on!

RE: Help from Duke BeBeyond Alumni

Hi, folks,

Recently I kept getting the following question: Would the cheating scandle affect Chinese students negatively here? I thought many of you are also bothered by the question nowadays: "Should I apply for Duke this year?"

Actually you are not alone. Not only you but most of us current first year students worried about that this spring, wandering whether we should come here or not. But after being here for almost three months, I haven't seen any negative influence upon me and other Chinese guys.

Till now I made very good friends with some American, Latin American, Japanese, Korean, Thai ppl, even sometimes we would talk about the cheating scandle things. They all said they just couldn't understand why there were stupid guys do such kind of stupid things, actually grades here matter nothing!!!! They don't treat all Chinese ppl as cheaters, although once in a while you may find some negative post on BW or somewhere else. Actually your worry is one of my incentives to apply for the "Admission Ambassador" here at Fuqua, I became one of 25 ambassadors among over 130 applicants at Fuqua and am only Chinese. So should you have any concern or question, just post here. I would try my best to bridge you guys with Admission Officers to help you, including me, pass this special suffer period.

If you haven't decided whether to apply for Duke or not, I do encourage you to do so. Think this way, if every else Chinese applicant would not apply for Duke in R1 but you did, isn't is much easier for you to stand out and secure a top school offer?

This year Duke applies new curriculum, which not only reschedule the order of the core courses but also grant more room for us to tailor made our own curriculum.  Now we have courses, such as Accounting, Corporate Finance, that are very critical for candidates who want to do IBanking in first two terms so that those guys can be well-prepared, while in years before, accounting and corporate finance were typically scheduled in term 2 and 3, for consulting fans, you would also have strategy, marketing and two-term communication classes to sharp your skills before taking case-interview in Feb or thereafter. The new curriculum really makes everyone streeful, and both alumni and current second year students feel astonished by the heavy workload we have now, but we all believe it will do good for us internship haunting right at the moment.

Another feeling I would like to share is that you can never underestimate Duke's reputation among American people. To be honest, prior to coming to Duke, I always think that Duke b-school is not the one of the M7, but nowadays, if you realized how many peers hold undergraduate degrees from Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern, MIT, Princeton, Chicago, you would definately impressed and say:umh, it's surely beyond my expectation, unh?

Richard, thank you so much for posting detailed information like this for us!

In fact, I read a lot of stories about Duke before, about how it has made its fame in the past three dacades, how wonderful the basketball team is, and how liberal it is in choosing its faculties to have started a new trend in the higher education in the US.

It is progressive and innovative!

Hi, Richard:

You seem to enjoy the life in Duke very much!
I was impressed to know you when you share IB experience in SH.

my question is : could you introduce more about how Duke help students to chase entrepreneurship in the future? I already duke's entrepreneur Center and its curriculum, but i have no idea about the tradition or additional strength of Duke in this area.

Hi, Dennis,

Thanks for your question, and sorry for late response coz I am in New York recent one week and have limited access to internet.

In terms of your question, I need to ask for help from experts in the area, and if you can name the future area (i mean industry) you are interested in to pursue your own start-up, that would be more convenient to address your concern more specifically.

Best luck to your application, I will come back with answer ASAP!

Richard
