China-US Biochemistry Admission (CUSBA)Program历史悠久，简单来说就是数个学校的Biochemistry相关的program均委托它来中国face-to-face面试。网上关于它的面经非常多，所以准备起来十分方便。
面试分4天举行，在面试通知的时候让我挑时间（应该是挑日期），我挑了第三天，感觉上第一天和第四天会有边际效用的影响，不合适……
早上八点签到。我迟到了五分钟-_-b签到完毕后负责人顾孝诚说CUSBA主要考察英语沟通能力……果然和传说中最水的面试相符……
接下来是五个面试官的自我介绍，包括family等信息，和General问答时间。
我被安排在下午14:20和15:00两段时间，各20分钟。蛮好的时间，因为15:20是Break，所以可以适当延长一下，考官不用掐着时间喊停。

以下是事隔一日后的回忆版面试实录。
【Part I】

参与者：Shawn Holt(S); Richard Hallick (R); Me (A)
S: How are you?
A: Fine thanks. How are you?
S: A little bit tired. Do you feel nervous?
A: No.
S: Are you sure?
A: A little bit…
S: Hehe, it is not necessary. So you arefrom Peking University?
A: Yes. 我已经毕业了, 化学方向…
S: (惊讶状) Chemistry?
A: (偷笑) 嗯, 在实验室里做RA, working with threeindependent projects.
S: We will talk about science later. 我们聊聊你的家庭吧.
A: 好啊
S: 你家乡在哪里, 父母是干嘛的, 有没有兄弟姐妹(siblings, 这个词我没听懂, -_-b), 对计划生育政策的看法, 有没有女朋友……
A: blablabla…
S: .What do you do in your leisure time?
A: I’ve been playing guitar for six yearsblabla…
S: What else?
A: -_-b nothing special… badminton maybe…
S: What else?
A: (XXOO^%&$) playing computer gamesmaybe (自嘲地笑)
S: 你怎么学英语的呢?
A: Reading papers, and participating someinternational activities
S: What kind of papers, science?
A: Yeah~
S: You’ve talked to many Americans?
A: Not too many actually… You know I am oneof the founders and chief researchers of Peking UniversityiGEM Team…
S: iGEM?
A: (口若悬河)……
S: Terrific! Let’s talk about yourindependent research.
A: (继续口若悬河)
S: What do you want to do after getting aPhD?
A: Finding a faculty position.
S: (微笑)
A: (为了显得与众不同) My research interests is on systems biology and synthetic biology.And my academic goal is to synthesize a minimal cell.
S: That’s cool! I guess we’ve had enough.Do you have any questions for me?
A: Yes. You know I want to find a facultyposition after earning my PhD. That’s based on my interests of both doingresearch and teaching. I regard you as a senior paradigm that I should learnfrom. So would you give me some advice about researching and teaching. Or whatdo you think is the most important quality to a scientist, and what is it to ateacher?
S: (肯定状) Creativity. Blabla…
A: Why is it important to a teacher?
S: To attract students blabla……

【期中小结】

面完S以后开始反思。首先讲iGEM的时候我花了很大力气讲不是我做的那个部分，结果一来讲的不清不楚的，二来等我想讲我做的那部分的时候S打住我说，we willtalk about it later. 讲自己的研究也是一样，他总是打断我说，what’s the conclusion, what’s the hypothesis…这说明我在介绍研究经历的时候太急于把所有东西都抖出来。在回答别的“闲聊”的问题也是一样，我都有急于多说话的倾向。不过也不能完全怪我……我说一句话S就敲一句话，敲的过程中啥表情也没有，搞得我都不知道是继续说呢，还是等他敲完……
总之，最大的经验教训是说研究经历的时候不要试图把所有东西都讲清楚。面试官本来就没期待着想听得完全明白，所以在技术层面上直接忽悠过去就完了（当然心里面还是要清楚的，防止他打断讲话追问）。


【Part 2】

R的问题基本和S同，连顺序都差不多一样！R比S和蔼很多，同时由于面完S以后有深刻反省，整个过程比S更为流畅。

在讲iGEM的时候我直接讲我做的那部分，对另一部分带过。R对另一部分也感兴趣，我就又顺带讲了一下。
讲自己的CRPproject的时候我跳过了建立方程，算bifurcation等过程，直接告诉他我得到的physiological role ofCRP binding sits. 之所以这样是因为R熟悉CRP，比较爽（S不知道CRP是啥……）。我感觉我的结论还纠正了R对于CRP是组成型表达的观点，hiahiahia……
R: So although your CRP reflects a smallregion, what do you learn from systems biology?
A: The temporal dimension is important intranscriptional regulation.
R: It is true…Do you have any questions forme?
A:（跟之前一样）
R:（不像S那么肯定）做science呢，imagination是很重要的。
A: what about teacher?
R: 你知道啦我做了25年老师了，什么level的课都教过……
A:（随口赞了一下）
R: 最重要的是你要教会学生思考科学的方法，Hypothesis driven, you know…

【期末总结：引导面试官】
CUSBA考场设有休息室，众applicants在其中聊天、休息、等候时常聊起被问到什么问题。有很多人说被问到技术性问题，比如酵母双杂交……这种没做过的东西在面试这么紧张的时候用中文我估计都说不清楚，何况英文……
所以要避免面试官问这种自己不熟悉的专业细节！我的方法很简单，就是尽可能多地在回答中设置有趣的points，给出下一个话题的主题（threads），主动让面试官顺着我的话往下问。

Examples：
Q: Where are you from?
A: Guangzhou.People there suffered a lot in the recent cold weather.
Over one million laborers couldn’t return totheir hometown for Chinese New Year but stayed in Guangzhou.
Thread: the recent cold weather

Q: How do you learn English?
A: Reading papers and participating someinternational activities.
Thread: papers and activities. 由于CUSBA面试官不会特别仔细地看申请人的CV和PS，所以主动说出亮点很重要。我参加过iGEM（一个国际合成生物学竞赛），并且拿了Grand Prize。这种东西说出来又有趣，又让人眼前一亮，还可以引导面试官继续往下问science部分的话题，所以要设计在某个（或某几个）必问的问题回答中。

Q: What’s your school/grade/major…
A: I major in Chemistry and got my Bachelordegree last July. Now I’m a research assistant in a microbiology lab, workingwith three independent projects.
Thread: independent projects. 不过两个面试官都对我的chemistry背景表示兴趣。

Q: What’s your plan after earning your PhD?
A: Finding a faculty position. My academicinterests include synthetic biology and systems biology, and my research goalis to synthesize a minimal cell. So I’m eager to have a lab of my own.
Thread: synthetic biology等名词

这种策略原则上适用于一切以考察你的communication skills为主要目的的conversations，如CUSBA面试、教授主动打电话过来的pre-interview等……
当然，在“主动抖出最闪亮的特点”这一条大原则上，一切面试都是一样的！不要期待着面试官会很耐心地研究你的材料（我当过面试官，很清楚面试数十人的时候的精神状态……），更不要有“材料里面写了，所以我就不说了”这种诡异的心理！！试想，你最闪亮的东西都已经写进材料里了（否则就不是一份好的申请材料），面试的时候你还能有什么东西更闪亮而能打动面试官呢？所以你只需要展开说你的闪光处，用更细致的语言描绘，补充材料里没有的细节，就足够了！重复亮点，重复优势，重复你的与众不同，在面试过程中反复强调！
